What documents do I need to provide?
Here's a typical list of things you should bring along or upload to your account on the web portal, as applicable, for personal returns:
New clients:
- all income documents (W-2's, 1099's)
- Form 1099-K's for merchant charges
- Covered California Health Insurance Statements: Form 1095-A (only if heath insurance provided through Covered CA)
- any activity pertaining to a Health Savings Account, including contributions to, earnings or losses from, and rollovers to that account
- business/rental income and expenses
- tuition fees paid or student loan interest paid (Form 1098-T "Tuition Paid" statements are often only available online--if you have a dependent in college, be sure to look for that form through the college financial office)
- IRA contribution information
- rollover or distribution amounts from retirement plans, 401k/403b plans, Medical Savings Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts, and Roth IRA conversions
- mortgage interest and property tax payments (1098's)
- property tax statements
- the “Final Closing Disclosure Statement” you received from your escrow company if you bought, sold, or re-financed property
- FTB Form 593-B received from your escrow company if you had state taxes withheld through escrow as part of a sale of property
- DMV registration (for vehicle license fees (VLF))
- charitable contributions (a worksheet you can use for your non-cash contributions is here)
- child care provider information (name, address, EIN, phone number, and amounts paid)
- Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) - if you have an IP PIN, you should have received a CP101A Notice from the IRS in January. This PIN number changes every year, so please provide me the latest letter or your return will be rejected upon e-filing
- routing and account numbers for direct deposit
- a copy of your drivers license or state-issued ID for everyone signing the return (taxpayer, spouse, business tax matters partner)
- recent paycheck stubs to potentially review 2024 withholding
- your completed personalized tax organizer (available upon request--mostly useful for those with self-employment or rental income)
New clients:
- current government-issued identification and a copy of social security card for every person on the return
- copy of last year's return (preferably the last 3 years of federal, 4 years of California)
- any notices or bills from the IRS, California or other states, or other tax entities
- a blank tax organizer is available here, if you'd like something to help you get organized
